Kompang SK Sungai Penchala

I was posted to Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Penchala in July 2013. I was shocked to find a small kampung school located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. I would come across chickens & cows on the way to school. I even told myself, “Instead of sending me here, might as well send me off to rural areas”. Well, as time passes by, I fell in love with the students & environment. I feel it is my duty to share my musical knowledge & open up these children’s eyes & experiences in music. I started a lot of teams here such as choir, dance (modern ya, I don’t do traditional), keyboard, & kompang.

My boys here are talented. They learned kompang from their elders at the surau. I only brush them up & take them for competition & shows. Syukur alhamdulillah our kompang team is doing really well.

Here is a video of their performances in the year 2018.

I use this opportunity to:

1. Give my boys exposure.
2. Give my boys experience.
3. Make extra money for music. (For any purpose regarding music for the school)

Shooting of the drama “Pujaan Hati Kanda” with Mira Filzah & Remy Ishak at Ijok.
Our biggest achievement is being a part of a TV3 drama, “Pujaan Hati Kanda”. They asked us to sponsor ourselves as a kompang team for the drama & I quickly said why not. Others were saying that I should not take this offer because we are not being paid. Well, I took it for the experience. How often do you get to be on TV? Rarely! Grab any opportunity that comes to you! Experiences are priceless. It cannot be bought.

One with the actor.
Syukur alhamdulillah I have a very strong group of supporting parents. One of the parent were willing to take my boys all the way to Ijok. I am super thankful for having a group of supportive parents. If I were to go by myself, not all of my boys would have to experience to be casted in a TV drama.

Aiman’s solo shot.
Aiman Nurhakim was the leader for my kompang group last year. He achieved 5A’s & 1B for his UPSR. Now he is in MRSM. Who says playing music will drag your studies down? Musicians are supposed to be disciplined with all the hardwork & practices.

“Pujaan Hati Kanda”
I will not say that my kompang group is the best in Kuala Lumpur. I would say that this is all fated & ‘rezeki’. As long as you are willing to sacrifice & commit. That is all we need in music.

Talent.
Commitment.
Support.
Effort.
Discipline.

Shooting at Ijok, Kuala Selangor.

Jejak Kompang

Interested in learning & teaching kompang? Here is a book I would love to share with you. It is written by my ex music teacher back in Perak.

‘Jejak Kompang’ by En Amin Nudin & En Baharul Anuar
This book is written by En Amin Nudin bin Abdul Rahman & En Baharul Anuar bin Omar. They are both music educators from Perak. Both are retired but still active in going around Malaysia and providing kompang courses for teachers & students.

This book is suitable for beginners. There are scores from various Malaysian rhythms such as ‘Masri’, ‘Inang’, & ‘Zapin’. There is also the score for ‘perarakan’ which is usually being played at weddings and official events.

A CD of a video performed by a group of school children is also provided.

If you are interested in getting this book, do not hesitated to ask me. Sadly I can’t give it for free because it is not writen by me. But you can order it through me. It costs RM20.00 without postage. You may e-mail at musicteacherkingnadiah@gmail.com or whatsapp me at 0125455120.

Never let our tradition die. Let our children know the beauty of traditional music. Let it be passed down to our coming generations. Lets do it for the love of music.

Corak Irama

I love teaching rhythm. So I decided to make myself a set of rhythm cards. Here’s the example of the rhythm cards made. All you need is a printer, coloured papers, scissors, laminating machine, mini whiteboard, & a whiteboard marker.

So I decided to print 4 sets in 4 different colours. 1 group 1 colour. It will be easier for us to differentiate the groups with colours. It can be any colour. Totally up to you.

Next will be the mini whiteboard. I got them from Mr. DIY. I got these bags from Mr. DIY too. Its cheap & reasonable. Don’t forget to lable the group numbers at the bag.

This will be the content of the bag. It consists of time signature, clefs, & notes of quavers, crochets, minims, semibreves, & crochet rests.

This is an example of my students using the mini whitebord. They are asked to create a pattern of rhythm by writing them using the whiteboard.

Here is another example of rhythms by my students. There are a few ways carrying out rhythm activities.

Rhythm activities:
1. Teacher claps a rhythm. Students clap back.
2. Teacher claps a rhythm. Students arrange the cards.
3. Teacher says out a rhythm. Students arrange the cards.
4. Students are asked to create themselves rhythms.

Inspired by Teacher Fiera

Assalamualaikum & a very good evening!

Hi, I’m Raja Nadiah binti Raja Zaharuddin Shah from Ipoh, Perak. I am a primary school music teacher at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Penchala, Kuala Lumpur but I am currently residing at Puchong Perdana.

The reason I am starting this blog is to share my musical knowledge with everybody. I hope that I get to help everyone out there regarding musical activities in schools.

The person that inspired me to start this blog is Teacher Fiera, an English teacher in Kelantan. We come from the same teachers training institute, Speacilist Teachers Training Institute, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. She was my senior there. Thank you so much for inspiring me.
